When There Were Six (By April)
Indigo watched as Patty ran out of the library. Coming from her hiding place between two
shelves, Indigo picked up the book Patty had dropped. Looking at the page it was on, she
read the heading: "Primary Colours".
Patty had been reading aloud, so Indigo understood what was bothering her. But at least
Patty knew where she had come from... That was six of the colour kids accounted for -
three were primary colours, and three were secondary colours. But where did she, Indigo,
come into it? Her own colour was not listed - it made her wonder why she existed.
Taking an encyclopaedia marked 'I' from the shelf, she looked up her colour. The
description read simply:
"A tertiary colour, produced from a mixture of blue and violet. Is often described as
an 'in-between colour', being not either a primary or secondary colour. The sixth colour
in the rainbow, although many people do not consider indigo as one of the colours as it
contains such a small percentage of it."
Indigo put the book down. This was such a shock to her. She had heard of the primary
colours, and knew that they were very important. But only now, did she learn which colour
kid belonged to which category.
Patty was upset, but what about her? At least she came after the other colour kids along
with Shy Violet and Lala Orange. But she, Indigo, was a loner; she came last, all by
herself. Was that why she always felt so different to everyone else? Because she was?
Why had she been brought into the world? She didn't have much to colour really - she would
colour the sky, but then Buddy would come along and change it. She would colour the
flowers, but Shy Violet would come along and make them better. She felt so insignificant.
Indigo's thoughts wandered. Where had she come from? It was all so confusing! She didn't
know why Patty was so upset; at least she had some sort of an idea where she came from,
what - or who - she was a product of. But Indigo was a mixture of blue and violet, and
that made her a mixture of blue and red and... oh, she didn't know! What, exactly, made up
her colour? If she wanted to create a child some day, it would be such an ugly colour,
unless she found a nice lad of the same colour as her. And what were her chances of
finding one and liking him, never mind loving him? Or would she and her partner have to
decide which of their colours the child should be in charge of?
Indigo got up and went outside. She needed to do some serious thinking, and where better
to do it than out in the fresh air?
Maybe Indigo should never have gone outside, for as soon as she got there, her mind was
made up. She couldn't stay there - she had to leave! Everywhere she looked, there was
green grass. If she looked up to escape it, she saw the cloudless blue sky and the blazing
yellow sun. She started to run - she had to get away from it all! Eventually, she turned
down a little lane and stopped to catch her breath. Looking around, she saw some beautiful
red roses, and was going to pick some until she remembered - the green grass, blue sky,
yellow sun... and now the red roses too. She hadn't seen any orange or violet yet, but she
was bound to soon. After all, on some days, the sun can be orange too and there are violet
flowers everywhere.
Indigo sighed and continued on her way, but this time at a walk. Looking up, she saw that
the sky was a nice shade of pink and immediately thought of Tickled Pink. She must feel
left out too, she reasoned. But Tickled Pink was not a colour kid, so it wasn't as
important to her... But then, of course, her not being a colour kid is a good enough
reason to feel left out in itself!
Indigo saw some bluebells and stopped to pick some. It took a while for it to dawn on her,
but then she realised... the bluebells were indigo! They were her favourite flowers, and
now she realised why. Because they were special; they were different.
She was different, and that's why she was there. To colour the little surprises - she was
special as she was. She was a one-off. After all, it must have been pretty difficult to
create her!
She turned back on herself and happily skipped back to Rainbow Land. She was special - and
she wouldn't let another negative thought enter her mind.
